CHAPTER TEN

“Cellphonus interruptus,” Helen said, trying not to laugh. Or cry.

Gordon stepped away and pushed his unruly hair back with both hands. “Again.”

Though Helen was certain the ancient gods, not modern technology, were to blame. The same gods who had decided she must pay for Helen of Troy’s crimes. Disrupting another episode of desperate hotness was just one more punishment in their bag of tricks.

She rolled off the hammock to check who had called. Either her mom was reporting on her date with Alistair or Sarah wanted to discuss yet another wedding detail. Meanwhile, she couldn’t get to first base with Mr. Wrong who tasted oh so right.

Which she realized, now that she was breathing regularly again, was a blessing in disguise.

Because circumstances between her and Gordon would never be different.

The past drifted back on the same honeysuckle-scented breeze.

And, worst of all, a little while with Gordon wouldn’t be enough.

Missed call from Louis, she read. Crap and double crap. She could barely think when her lace undies were in a tight, wet twirl, much less talk. To her fiancé.

“Anything wrong?” Gordon stood braced against the pillar, looking as though his tighty-whities weren’t very comfortable right now either.

“I’m not sure. I need to call my friend back. It may be an emergency.”

The stock market might have crashed. Louis’s penthouse might have caught fire. Or the more horrifying possibility—Louis was barreling down the interstate in one of his Porsche Carreras on his way to Illinois. Another unwelcome surprise, like the ski trip to Utah when he knew she loathed skiing. Or the gift of a Louis Vuitton luggage set that she thought, even in her pre-coupon-cutting days, was too luxurious to lurch down airport chutes. Which she’d returned.

Or the two-carat diamond engagement ring. Which she’d kept.

How could she say no when Louis got down on his knee in a crowded four-star restaurant and proposed? Be my life’s companion were his actual words. And he didn’t even watch Masterpiece Theater.

“I guess I’ll go then,” Gordon said. But his muddy Timberland boots didn’t budge an inch.

Ask me again. Ask if you can touch me.

How could she say no to a man who asked first?

The crickets had begun their nightly racket—just in time to jolt her back to reality. “Yes. You should go.”

Gordon scuffed his heel against the floorboard. In the dim lamplight, his downcast face was hard to read. “After all, we’d only regret it in the long run.”

“In the long run,” she repeated softly. That’s right. She was supposed to be thinking about the future—as the call from Louis so inconveniently reminded her.

Gordon moved a few steps toward her, then, changing his mind, walked quickly down the stairs. “Good night, Helen,” he called out.

Holly, hiding somewhere in the long grass, honked her good-night wishes as well.

Call me, Louis’s voicemail message said. She couldn’t put it off any longer.

“How is my beautiful girl?” he asked. “Do you miss me?”

“Fine,” she murmured.

Forget Utah and impractical luggage. Right now, listening to Louis’s caressing voice, Helen couldn’t help but recall the best of them.
